Nine villages in southern Italy collectively known as La Grecia Salentina (Salentine Greece) or, in the local dialect, Griko have maintained aspects of the Greek language and culture that have survived for centuries. Recently, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the area where she was warmly welcomed by the local population.

Grecia Salentina is the name given to a segment of Salento where Griko — a dialect of Greek — is still spoken. The area comprises nine villages — Calimera, Martano, Castrignano dei Greci, Corigliano d'Otranto, Melpignano, Soleto, Sternatia, Zollino and Martignano — located inland within the "triangle" of Lecce, Galatina and Maglie.

The municipalities that make up Grecìa Salentina have always been 9, but since 2007 other non-Greek-speaking towns have been added, reaching 60000 inhabitants in the entire area.
